This webinar invites the CMS and the management and organisation studies communities to reflect on our own practices within institutions that are heavily white. Within a context of institutionalised racism and machismo, the webinar will explore the role of (a) universities as organisations placed at the centre of educational and social practice and (b) academics as educators and researchers influencing the next generation of citizens, organisations (including our universities) and policy making.
As universities, and business schools in particular, are viewed as part of the problem of racial inequalities in societies, we question how can they be(come) part of the solution of fairer and more democratic workplaces and society, where Black Lives are equal to all human lives. How can we change the dominant white culture of academia, with actions and policies that go beyond the ‘writing about it’ and can actually make a difference to the lives of staff, students and consequently society. Ultimately, we hope to provide some suggestions of how we can upset the current academic paradigm based on systemic race (and gender) inequalities.
